Zhmerinka.
How many jokes,
legends and
how many
associations are
connected
with this town!

Demonstrative ghetto on the border of the occupation zones of Romania and Germany during the second World War in which the theatrical troupe worked.
The beautiful railroad-station (constructed before the Revolution), floating by the windows of a train like an ocean liner.
Jewish town with the market and a big quantity of former synagogues. The synagogues were built for centuries. The buildings of the synagogues stand till nowadays, but Jewish prayers don't sound there today.
Still the Jews and Jewish traditions are alive in Zhmerinka. The musicians didn't forget the great and merry Jewish weddings and songs which sounded there.
There is in Zhmerinka a Jewish singer who sings Jewish songs. It is - Bella Bondarevskaya. Recently, due to the National Radio of Ukraine she was heard by the whole Ukraine. And the Radio in Kiev received a lot of letters with questions: where else is it possible to hear this singer? Where could one buy the tape with this beautiful voice?
Very many letters came and not from the Jews.
But … Show business it not for a modest singer from Zhmerinka! The organization of concerts, issue the cassettes or compact discs costs much money, which are absent.
Says Bella Bondarevskaya: I was born in a small Ukrainian town Zhmerinka. From the earliest childhood with my mother and the elder brother I went through all the horror of the occupation and ghetto. And already then I got to be fond of Jewish songs. Standing on a small chair, I was singing loudly, and the people who surrounded me, listened to my songs with a tears in their eyes.
I see my young, beautiful mother, who is bending above her sewing and singing a sad song: "A shnaider gheit…"  I remember the gay Jewish weddings after the War, when all the people at the wedding sang and danced "Freilex".
And today both Jewish sadness and joyfullness of those weddings sounds in my songs.
I'd like to bring my songs up to everyone but as we say "My finances sing romances!" Where are you, the Jewish businessmen, sponsors and benefactors!?"
